Working in Community

On January 19, over 70% of DISHER’s 160-member team came together for a day of learning, serving, and building community. The Vintage Place in Grand Rapids was the venue for the bi-annual event.

Jeff Disher’s focus for the day was Working in Community. It was selected because of DISHER’s significant growth, both as a team and in our business model. In Jeff’s opening remarks, he shared that no matter where we spend our work hours– we can connect as community. The team was encouraged to share project ideas, project successes, personal interests, team events, lunches, and life… together. After Jeff’s talk, teams gathered in smaller groups and shared what that could look like and what DISHER could do to foster that community.

The guest speaker of the day, Toran Scott, provided dynamic challenges. As the former Pastor of Spiritual Formation and Discipleship at Central Wesleyan Church, Toran shared concrete tools for how each person could apply the concept of Working in Community to their lives, and then what that community may look like on a corporate level.

Focus for 2017 is Working in Community

After a short break, there was an open-forum setting. During this time, teams broke into smaller groups to discuss topics of our choosing. Most topics centered around the theme for the day, but some teams chose other DISHER-related topics with the goal of making DISHER an even better place to work and serve our clients. Each small team then provided their thoughts and ideas to the larger team. Those ideas were all documented and will continually be reviewed by DISHER’s leadership.

At the end of the day, team members broke into eight groups to participate in stewardship events throughout the community. Our teams served at:  Habitat for Humanity, Senior Neighbors, Buist Electric’s Community Assistance Center, Tri-Cities Love INC, Gateway Rescue Mission, SG Komen, Children’s Advocacy Center and Habitat Restore. What an amazing day for the DISHER team.
